Public Anger Growing At Bank’s Refusal To Offer New Loans

One job which I expect the majority of the population would place at the bottom of their ideal career list at the moment would be that of dealing with customer complaints in any one of the major high street banks or building societies.

According to a recent survey amongst consumers, there is a growing amount of public anger being aimed in the direction of many of our well known financial institutions, particularly when it comes to the reluctance of banks to offer personal loans and mortgages to their customers.

The survey, which was commissioned by the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA), found that out of 1,800 individuals interviewed, 58 per cent thought that banks should be doing more to provide realistically priced loans to borrowers in order to help restore growth to the UK economy and many potential borrowers are in the belief that they are unable to obtain the loan they require simply due to the attitude of lending institutions and their unhelpful and restrictive criteria when it comes to loan approvals.

Peter Bolton King, of the NAEA said that the government should be placing more pressure on banks and building societies to get them to offer loans again, rather than declining record numbers of loan applications. He said “We cannot let the banks convince us that shutting up shop when it comes to mortgage lending is a responsible move. The government must do more to put pressure on those banks that are refusing to lend, while highlighting those banks that are easing restrictions to get the economy moving again.

It is time to accept that responsible lending to responsible people is necessary for the country.”
