Making debt loans work
There are many ways to tackle personal debt problems, the most popular of which is using a loan to consolidate all of one’s outstanding debts with the intention of paying one lower, more affordable rate.
In theory using a loan in this way makes a lot of sense, and used correctly can also be very effective. However, recent research suggests that a large proportion of people who use this method end up increasing their overall debt and sinking deeper into financial difficulties.
A leading financial website has conducted a survey among UK borrowers and has discovered that almost 2/3rd’s of consolidation loan applicants worsen their situation. It has advised potential borrowers to tread with an air of caution when entering into debt consolidation loan agreements.
The main downfall for individuals seems to stem from their actual understanding as to how a loan of this type works. If a consumer is in need of a loan to consolidate debts or any other debt tool for that matter, it is important to realise that sourcing additional credit will render the process obsolete. If personal debts have got to the stage where they can be classed as “unmanageable” a debt loan can alleviate the pressure effectively making payments more affordable. However, if a person then acquires new forms of credit they are adding to the original debt and may require a new loan to consolidate the previous debt loan, which of course is impractical.
This type of behaviour can be dangerous for the individual and may require them to seek more severe debt management tools, such as an IVA later down the line. For a debt consolidation loan to be truly effective, the individual will need to understand how and why their situation warranted its use in the first place.
The most successful debt loan applicants realise that for the process to work, it is imperative to change attitudes towards credit. If you can exercise a little self-control when it comes to credit, a debt loan is more likely to have the desired effect.
