High Street banks Provide Poor Loan Service

It probably won’t come as much of a surprise to many readers that a new survey into people’s satisfaction with the main high street banks in the UK, has found that the majority of banks are falling well short of what is expected of them from their customers.

The survey, which has been conducted by Which? Money in their people’s choice poll, found that customers were generally unhappy with the service provided by many banks when it came to applying for a personal loan, home owner loan or mortgage, credit card or current account.

The survey also found that the small direct independent banks scored much higher than the large high street giants, with personal loan customers and those looking for other financial services.

First Direct, Smile and the One Account came out on top in the customer service survey, which covered all banking areas including current accounts, savings and investments, as well as personal loans, home owner loans and credit cards.

First Direct came out top in the survey, with a total score of 82 per cent, with the One Account and Smile close behind in second and third places respectively. The Lloyds Banking Group, which includes the Halifax, Bank of Scotland and Cheltenham & Gloucester, were at the bottom of the satisfaction survey, along with the Santander Group.

A spokesman for Which? commented that the survey proved it was important to shop around for the best loan or current account. Peter Vicary-Smith said “Whether it’s a current account, mortgage, credit card or savings account, we consistently see the same names keeping their customers happy.”

“Time and again, the big high street banks are found to be lacking when it comes to good customer service. People who are unhappy with their bank must vote with their feet and move to a better financial provider.”
