Banks And Building Societies Still Looking For Reasons Not To Offer Loans

Two or three years ago, it used to be incredibly easy for an individual to be able to get a new loan, whether this was a personal unsecured loan, or a mortgage or homeowner loan.

In fact many experts are now saying that it was far too easy to obtain a cheap loan, due to the fact that lenders were in massive competition with each other and carried out minimal checks on individuals before offering them large loan amounts and this has led directly to the credit crunch and financial problems we are experiencing at the moment within the banking and loan sector.

These days, now that banks and building societies have had their fingers burned due to their relaxed (and some might say irresponsible) lending criteria in the past, things have changed significantly and lenders seem to have adopted the opposite extreme when it comes to screening potential loan applicants, checking out every minute detail of a borrower’s credit history before offering them the loan they require.

Due to the fact that there are now so few lenders who are still active in the loan market, those lenders who are still theoretically offering loans can afford to be particularly selective about who they lend to, as there is very little competition about in the form of other providers and it has even been known for a potential borrower to be rejected for a new loan simply because of the fact that they missed a single credit card payment.

Banks, building societies and other loan companies are all saying that they are open for business and want to offer loans to their customers, but in many cases this could simply be a case of trying to keep the government happy, when the reality is that many lenders are still looking for reasons not to offer loans.
