Are you a deceptive shopper?

Theirs a shocking new trend developing amongst UK couples, and chances are if you’re in a relationship you have already fallen victim to it.

Does this scenario sound familiar? Your partner has been out shopping for the day on his or her own to return later that evening with a bounty of shiny new products and toys. You peruse through the hoard paying special attention to that new pair of shoes or fashionable new watch, resulting in the following question, “this is nice, how much did it cost?” Now did you know that in almost 25% of circumstances, the answer to that question would be false?

That’s the findings according to a new survey conducted by the Halifax. Accordingly, deceptive shopping (as its known) is costing couples approximately 6 billion pounds every year. The research suggests that women are most likely to lie to their partner about their purchases, with over 60% falsifying the cost of new purchases (the most common of which being items of clothing). However, men are also in on the act with approximately 30% halving the actual amount they had spent at the shops.

The most common reason for this type of deception is to avoid the perception of selfishness from the other partner, with the minority telling untruths to make their decision to purchase such items, seem a little wiser than they actually we’re.
